We collected the car from Silverstone museum in December 2021 where it had been for some years. before that it had been In Donnington museum which of course closed some time ago, The car needs more than recommissioning; more like a complete rebuild. The engine wouldn’t turn but a good dose of diesel down the bores and a bit of encouragement sorted that. There’s plenty of methanol rot (methanol corrodes aluminium) and the suspension , steering and brakes need sorting out. We have decided to have a drop-down prop shaft which will give us a lower seating position and we will change the bodywork to give a straight line between the wind shield and the nose, taking out the “ski slope” that you can see in the photograph above. We are doing this because we have very strong evidence (mainly photographs that this is how the car was configured originally.
There are lots of stories about GP2 and we are trying to discover which ones are true (!) and to delve into its history. I have a charming letter from Peter King who bought the car in 1952 when he was a 17 year old apprentice with ERA, saving it from being scrapped!
